Safety
AT PHI, THE LACK OF AN ACCIDENT DOES NOT EQUAL THE PRESENCE OF SAFETY
PHI is on a journey to uphold the highest standards of safety and operational integrity by embedding a culture of safety throughout our organization. Building and sustaining an industry-leading safety performance requires deliberate actions to reduce exposure. From line-level teams to senior leaders, our collective commitment to safety shapes decision-making every day, at every level.
Destination Zero is our vision. At the end of each day, our goal is to end tomorrow incident free. Our journey—and our commitment to safety—is the resilience that has defined PHI.
COMMITTED BEYOND COMPLIANCE
For more than 74 years, PHI has played a significant role in advancing and strengthening safety standards in the rotor wing industry. Not only are we committed to creating a safe environment and working diligently to prevent incidents and injuries throughout our operations, but we're also focused on continually improving our safety management systems and compliance programs by engaging our employees, implementing behavior-based safety programs and sharing best practices and lessons learned.
Our commitment to safety extends well beyond regulatory compliance standards and simply reducing risk. We work closely with industry and government agencies to drive positive, industry-wide change that improves safety protocols—not only for our own teams and passengers, but for the global aviation community.
The PHI Approach to Safety
Safety Management System (SMS)
Our SMS provides a detailed approach and rigorous framework for how our teams manage and control safety-critical activities. By channeling our relentless commitment to safety into a reinforced loop of procedures, practices and policies, we have a systematic and integrated method for managing safety that continually strives for improvement. At the center of our SMS sits the Human Dimension of Safety—a critical asset without which the proper functioning of modern technological systems would be impossible.Human Dimension of Safety
In 2019, PHI introduced the Human Dimension of Safety as the fifth pillar of our company’s SMS. It is designed to recognize human performance as one of the most critical aspects of safety performance and outlines processes and procedures aimed at strengthening the mental, social and physiological well-being of all employees. In doing so, we have created a sustainable path to ensuring human factors remain at the forefront of our safety management efforts.
Destination Zero
Destination Zero is designed to empower every single PHI employee to stand up, speak out and take action to create the safest culture and work environment possible for our people, our customers and our communities. It has set a non-negotiable standard against which we can measure our success and stimulate meaningful safety conversations. Destination Zero is not only a goal to help us get better, but an expectation of actions to take and results to achieve.
Together, we believe that zero is possible—zero flight accidents, zero personal injuries and zero preventable occurrences.
Life-Saving Behaviors
In 2014, we set out on a mission to compile and analyze safety data from throughout PHI’s history with the goal of completely reevaluating how we understand, approach and manage risks. The result was a set of 10 clear and concise Life-Saving Behaviors designed to control exposure to life-altering injuries or fatalities. These behaviors establish actionable lines of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors that guide the activities of each of our employees—moment by moment, task by task, day by day.Learn More About
